A 100-watt USB-C cable is not a single product. Retail shelves still mix USB PD 3.0 charge-only leads, USB4 20 Gbps data cables with 100 W, and USB4 40 Gbps cables that also do 100 W — sometimes in the same bin, with the same orange 100W badge.
The cable that charges a 14-inch laptop overnight is not always the cable that should sit between a dock and a desktop. The difference is in the e-marker chip, the wire gauge, and whether the plug even negotiates USB4.
Plenty of brands print 100W on the jacket and stop there. That number is a power ceiling, not a data promise. If you only need to charge, a PD cable with a 5 A e-marker is enough. If you need a dock, 4K video, and a drive on the same plug, you need the USB4 40 Gbps part — and you should confirm it on the plug, not the marketing tile.

What the jacket actually tells you
Look for three independent claims: watts, amps, and gigabits. A honest 100 W cable will say 5 A (or 240 W / 5 A on newer EPR leads). USB4 20 Gbps and 40 Gbps are printed as 20G or 40G, or as the USB-IF certified logo with a number. Thunderbolt 4 cables are a superset; they will also do USB4 40 Gbps and 100 W.
If the only marking is “100W Fast Charge,” treat it as a charger lead until you test data. Phone accessory brands love that badge.
USB-IF certification is the boring way to be sure. The logo with 40 is the 40 Gbps cable. The logo with a lightning bolt and 4 is Thunderbolt 4, which is fine for USB4 hosts. No logo and a huge 100W print is a coin flip.
One-of-one desk setup, three cables
Keep a charge lead, a dock lead, and a travel lead
Most people need two, not three. A short 100 W PD cable lives on the nightstand. A certified USB4 40 Gbps cable lives on the dock. The travel pouch gets a second 40 Gbps cable only if you actually plug a drive and a display on the road.
Do not daisy-chain cheap 100 W cables through a hub and expect USB4 speeds. The first uncertified plug in the chain drops you back to USB 2.0 data more often than the wattage badge suggests.
The V-ONE analog here is not a concept car. It is a concept cable: the one that looks like every other 100 W lead until you read the e-marker. Cadillac built a one-off from race hardware. USB-C vendors built a aisle of lookalikes from the same plastic shell.
Buy the certified 40 Gbps cable once. Label it. Leave the orange 100W phone cables in the phone drawer.
